  • Mavericks' Morez Johnson: Dealing with lower-leg soreness

Head coach Dusty May said Wednesday that Johnson has been limited in training camp due to lower-leg soreness, Ron Harrod Jr. of DLLS Sports reports.

The Mavericks have been managing Johnson's workload ahead of his rookie season, with May noting that the 20-year-old participated in every other live session Wednesday. Additionally, May said Monday that the power forward was getting close to practicing in full. Still, the Michigan product's status will be worth monitoring ahead of Dallas' preseason opener against the Rockets on Friday, Oct. 9.

  • Mavericks' Vsevolod Ishchenko: Playing overseas in 2026-27

Ishchenko will play for Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia during the 2026-27 season, Grant Afseth of Roundtable Sports reports.

Ishchenko was selected by Dallas with the No. 56 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and joined the team for Summer League action, but he won't play for the organization during the 2026-27 season. The Mavericks will hold his draft rights while he plays overseas.

  • Mavericks' Morez Johnson: Not yet practicing in full

Johnson (undisclosed) has been limited during training camp thus far, though head coach Dusty May said Monday that he's working his way back and getting close to practicing in full, Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com reports.

It's unclear what Johnson is dealing with, though the issue doesn't appear to be a long-term concern. Still, the 20-year-old's status will be worth monitoring ahead of Dallas' preseason opener against Houston on Friday, Oct. 9. The No. 9 overall pick in this year's draft, Johnson is fresh off winning a national championship at Michigan, where he averaged 13.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.1 blocks and 0.7 steals in 25.1 minutes per game in 40 outings.

  • Mavericks' Daniel Gafford: To have green light from deep

Gafford could have the green light to attempt occasional three-pointers this season, with head coach Dusty May encouraging the center to expand his offensive game, Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News reports.

May said the Mavericks want Gafford to become more of a playmaking decision-maker on the perimeter and indicated that he'll be allowed to take rhythm threes as long as he earns those opportunities. Gafford has attempted just one three-pointer across his seven NBA regular seasons and has yet to make one, so any development of a perimeter shot would represent a significant change to his offensive profile. He averaged 9.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 21.7 minutes across 55 regular-season appearances in 2025-26.

  • Mavericks' Naji Marshall: Shooting a top priority

Marshall said during Media Day that improving his three-point shooting was a major focus during the offseason, Austin Veazey of SI.com reports.

The 28-year-old expressed confidence that the work will translate this season, saying that becoming a more consistent perimeter threat would make him "unstoppable." Marshall averaged a career-high 15.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.1 steals across 74 regular-season appearances in 2025-26 despite shooting just 29.1 percent from three. A significant improvement from beyond the arc would add another dimension to his offensive game after Dallas signed him to a three-year extension in August.

  • Mavericks' Santi Aldama: Limited during Saturday's practice

Aldama (undisclosed) was limited during Saturday's practice, Noah Weber of TheSmokingCuban.com reported.

Head coach Dusty May didn't elaborate, only stating Aldama is dealing with a "nagging injury." The 2021 No. 30 overall pick had spent his entire career in Memphis before being traded to Dallas in July of 2026. In 278 regular-season games, including 82 starts, he averaged 10.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 23.4 minutes per contest. His shooting acumen will allow the Mavericks to stretch the floor, and his versatility enables him to man multiple positions while playing various roles. Aldama underwent knee surgery in March, and while it's unknown if that's still a concern, fantasy managers should continue monitoring his health throughout training camp.

  • Mavericks' Seth Lundy: Lands camp deal with Dallas

Lundy signed a training camp contract with the Mavericks on Friday, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.com reports.

After missing the last two years due to injury, Lundy will compete for a spot on Dallas' regular-season roster. The 26-year-old swingman appeared in four Las Vegas Summer League games with the Raptors this offseason, averaging 20.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.8 steals across 27.1 minutes per showing.

  • Mavericks' Cooper Flagg: Measures at 6-foot-10

Flagg said at Mavericks Media Day that he has grown from his listed height of 6-foot-9 last season to an official barefoot measurement of 6-foot-10, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports.

The 19-year-old's continued physical development gives him even more positional size heading into his second NBA season after an impressive rookie campaign. The sky is the limit as Flagg will now benefit from playing alongside a healthy Kyrie Irving in 2026-27.

  • Mavericks' Kyrie Irving: Close to 100 percent

Mavericks president Masai Ujiri offered an encouraging update on Irving's recovery from his knee injury Friday, saying the veteran guard is "right there" as he works toward returning to game action, Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Irving missed the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, but he has been participating in pickup games during his ramp-up process. The 34-year-old last played in 2024-25, when he averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.3 steals in 36.1 minutes across 50 regular-season appearances. Ujiri's comments provide another positive sign that Irving is closing in on his return, though Dallas has yet to announce a definitive timeline.

  • Mavericks' Dereck Lively: Dallas will be patient with him

Mavericks president Masai Ujiri said Friday that Lively (foot) is "making good progress" in his recovery, Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Ujiri noted that Lively has progressed to shooting and is working toward running on the court, though Dallas intends to remain patient with the 22-year-old. Lively underwent right foot surgery in December after appearing in just seven regular-season games in 2025-26, averaging 4.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.6 blocks in 16.4 minutes per game. He has yet to be cleared for training camp, and his status for the beginning of the regular season remains uncertain.

  • Mavericks' Dwight Powell: Signs with Dallas

Powell formally re-signed with the Mavericks on Friday, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports.

The 35-year-old is joining Dallas for training camp, and Stein adds that the team has not ruled out creating a spot for Powell on the regular-season roster despite currently carrying the maximum 15 standard contracts. Powell appeared in 63 games (12 starts) last regular season, averaging 3.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists.

  • Mavericks' Dereck Lively: Not yet cleared for training camp

Lively (foot) has not been cleared to participate in training camp yet and is slowly ramping up to begin basketball activity, Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com reports.

Lively underwent right foot surgery in December after appearing in just seven regular-season games (four starts), during which he averaged 4.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.6 blocks and 0.6 steals across 16.4 minutes per contest. MacMahon notes that Lively has not suffered a setback. However, the big man is still in jeopardy of missing time to begin the 2026-27 regular season, and it wouldn't be surprising if he operates under a heavy minutes restriction upon his return. If the 22-year-old misses an extended period, Daniel Gafford, Santi Aldama (knee) and Morez Johnson would be candidates for increased burn.

  • Mavericks' Marcus Sasser: Competing for backup role in 2026-27

Sasser will compete for playing time off the Mavericks' bench in 2026-27, and he could operate as the primary backup to Kyrie Irving (knee).

After spending the first three years of his career with the Pistons, Sasser will get a fresh start in Dallas. The 25-year-old logged several career lows in 2025-26, averaging 5.2 points, 2.0 assists, 1.0 rebounds and 0.5 steals in 12.0 minutes per showing across 38 regular-season outings (five starts). Although he shot a career-worst 39.0 percent from the field last season, Sasser connected on a career-high 41.5 percent of his three-point tries on 2.8 attempts per contest. He'll have a much clearer path to a consistent role with the Mavericks, as he'll presumably compete with rookie Sergio de Larrea for playing time off the bench behind Irving. While Cooper Flagg should continue to take on significant ball-handling duties, Sasser will likely have the opportunity to carve out a meaningful role, especially if he impresses during training camp and the preseason.

  • Mavericks' Kyrie Irving: Ramping up toward return

Irving (knee) has been playing in pickup games this offseason in an effort to ramp up toward his return to the court in 2026-27, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports.

Irving suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in March 2025 and did not play in the 2025-26 campaign. The veteran point guard has had plenty of time to recover and will enter training camp having played in pickup games this summer. It wouldn't be surprising to see the 34-year-old enter the season on a minutes restriction, though it appears likely he'll be ready to play by Opening Night. Irving appeared in 50 regular-season games in 2024-25 before suffering the knee injury, averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.8 combined steals-plus-blocks in 36.1 minutes per contest.

  • Mavericks' Sergio de Larrea: Preparing for first NBA season

De Larrea ended with nine points (3-5 FG, 3-3 3Pt, 0-1 FT), two rebounds and one assist in 11 minutes during Spain's 108-106 loss to Greece in Tuesday's FIBA World Cup qualifier.

De Larrea made the most of his playing time Tuesday. The rookie first-round pick has parts of six seasons of international playing experience under his belt, but he'll likely require a standout camp to have any chance of challenging the likes of Marcus Sasser, Zaccharie Risacher and Caleb Martin for playing time off the bench with the Mavericks to begin 2026-27.

  • Mavericks' Santi Aldama: Could be ready for camp

Aldama (knee) is expected to be ready in time for training camp, according to NBA reporter Marc Stein.

Aldama's 2025-26 campaign was cut short due to a right knee injury, which resulted in an arthroscopic procedure in mid-March. The Mavericks start practice prior to Sept. 29 because they have preseason games abroad, and it sounds like Aldama could have a good chance of featuring in those. However, Aldama will not be playing for Spain during the European qualifying for the 2027 World Cup at the end of August, per Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com.

  • Mavericks' Morez Johnson: To compete for immediate role

Johnson enters his rookie campaign after Dallas selected him ninth overall in the 2026 NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-9 forward showcased his upside during Summer League, including a 27-point, eight-rebound performance against Golden State and a four-block outing against the Lakers. Dallas' crowded frontcourt may prevent Johnson from immediately seeing major minutes, but his rebounding, defensive versatility and athleticism make him one of the Mavericks' most intriguing long-term prospects.
